Guyana targets new tourism record after arrivals rise 22 per cent

Guyana is targeting another record year for tourism after welcoming 453,489 visitors in 2025 – a 22 per cent increase over the previous year.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues said on Sunday visitor arrivals this year continue to exceed the figures recorded in the corresponding months of 2025.

“This year also we are looking to increase that and break our record from last year and let this year, 2026, be the highest number of visitor arrivals on record,” she said while appearing on the ‘Starting Point’ podcast.

She added that the government is seeking to build on that growth by attracting major conferences, expanding festivals and raising the country’s international profile.

New hotels, restaurants and tourism experiences are also creating jobs, generating economic activity and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The minister highlighted the Guyana Tourism Authority’s (GTA) work, which she said has helped launch more than 40 tourism products over the past six years.

Much of that work has focused on developing sustainable and community-based tourism, particularly in indigenous communities.

“I have seen that foundational work being done. What I want to do now is to bring a lot of visibility to the country,” she committed.

She added that a predictable calendar of festivals will help potential visitors plan their travel, arrange time off work and experience the country’s culture.

Tourism growth should also support small businesses and encourage the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage and natural environment.

“It’s not just about increasing visitor arrivals, but it’s about championing small businesses,” said Minister Rodrigues.

Pointing to the role of agencies such as the Guyana National Bureau of Standards and the Small Business Bureau, she said that, beyond opening new establishments, work to strengthen standards, support entrepreneurs and facilitate trade remained important to the growth of industry and commerce.
